TV ON DVD: What I Still Need...

I recently finished skimming through this book on TV SHOWS from the 1950's to the present and I wrote down all the shows that aren't yet out on DVD that were favorites of mine. Here, in alphabetical order, are the shows I still want to ownon DVD if they ever get released: ALICE (so far only a Best Of DVD exists, but I want the Complete First Season)....BOSOM BUDDIES (a very young Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari in drag)...FAMILY TIES (I am really surprised this one isn't on DVD yet)...THE HOGAN FAMILY (This was one of my favorite family comedies of the 80s)...IT'S A LIVING (Remember this one from the 80s? It was a comedy about waitresses at work on a revolving restaurant atop a skyscraper)...THE LOVE BOAT (I know, I'm a freak. But I GOTTA own this one!)...SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (I want all 32 complete seasons on DVD..NOT these Best Of compilations that currently occupy space at Best Buy)...SILVER SPOONS (This one came out when I was the same age as Ricky Shroeder was in this early 80s comedy)...SQUARE PEGS (This one was, like, TOTALLY AWESOME!)...THE WONDER YEARS (I think music rights issues are slowing this one down from getting released)...AND HERE ARE SOME RARE ONE-SEASON WONDERS AND RARITIES that you may(and most likely MAY NOT) have heard of: GOING PLACES (a comedy with Heather Locklear), HARPER VALLEY PTA, THE BRADY BRIDES, JOANIE LOVES CHACHI, OTHERWORLD, THE PAUL LYNDE SHOW, SUPERTRAIN, WE GOT IT MADE and WOLF LAKE

BOX PIX

I have decided to reveal my box office must-see pix for the weekend EACH WEEKEND til 2007. I am basing my top box office must-sees from early reviews I have read and from my own desires (let's face it: REAL reviewers's reviews mean jack shit some times). SO, for the weekend of October 20/21: MY TOP PICK: MARIE ANTOINETTE. First off, Entertainment Weekly gave it a glowing B+ review. HOWEVER, the film was largely booed at Cannes this year (alas, mostly from the french). I'm a fan of Sofia Coppola's blending of 18th-century history with early 80's New Romantic pop music (New Order, Atom Ant, Bow Wow Wow, The Cure: WHEW, if nothing else the soundtrack is going to ROCK when I buy it). I'm also a fan of Kirstin Dunst (hard to believe it's the same little girl who kissed Brad Pitt in INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE) and Jason Schwartzman (great in FREAKS & GEEKS, not so great in BEWITCHED). I think this movie is going to have a fast-pace hardly found in traditional period pieces, and cinematography hints to be amazing. SECOND PLACE: THE GRUDGE 2 (opened last weekend). I don't know about you but previews to GRUDGE 2 were pretty intense. True, this means jack shit (hmm, that word again) on tha actual final product. Indeed, Entertainment Weekly (EW) gave it a so-so C+. But it's that time of the year when scary movies have clout, and Amber Tamblyn has some serious spook-film pedigree (the original THE RING). This movie should do some decent business - at least until SAW 3 opens next week. THIRD PLACE: RUNNING WITH SCISSORS. This Anette Bening flick might be JUST quirky enough to be entertaining, but the glum subject manner doesn't jump out and make my asshole twitch. EW reviewed it with a C. PICK FOR FOURTH: THE PRESTIGE. This is the big-budget magician movie starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale. It's also from the acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, who helmed BATMAN BEGINS. I was one of the few who didn't get all that entertained by BATMAN BEGINS, though I surely see the quality in it - and I am happy the director took that movie and gave it his own flavor. But honestly, I can't separate THE PRESTIGE from the ILLUSIONIST - I thought it was the same movie, only with a name change. However, it scored well with EW: a B+ FIFTH PLACE: One of the highest-profiled movies of the weekend is Clint Eastwood's Oscor follow-up: FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS. Even if the movie had scored well with the critics (it didnt: EW gave it a B-), I would be hard-pressed to go see it. I am just not a big war movie fan. And it appears to have bloody battles ala SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. With the war in Iraq ongoing I guess I am just not up to go escape to the cineplex this weekend and have "real gore" thrown at me (though I WILL take in "fake gore" from GRUDGE 2). And those are the TOP FIVE PICKS OF THE WEEKEND from Sean Storm.

Loving LOST...

The first season of LOST was a brilliant depiction of people who crash-land on a mysterious island and try to figure out where they are, WHO they are, how will they survive the island and how will they survive each other. Very little was revealed about the island itself, which left many viewers, well, lost. Then came the second season: and though it was entertaining, it progressed slowly and spent too much time merging the tailies with our core crew and figuring out who the 'others' were. Not to mention the seriously unpopular Ana Lucia character getting in the way - and on our nerves. But then at the end of the second season something BRILLIANT happened: the show got really exciting all over again. The whole 'hatch' mystery was resolved, we met The Others, and Ana bit the dust. And so season 3 begins: and I am basking in new revelations and new mysteries: it's as if the first 2 seasons SLOWLY built up to something BIGGER than just an island with a hatch: there is a whole community of people living on this island. AND there is a HOTTTTTT newcomer in the form or Rodrigo Santiago (or something like that). The show will air uninterrupted for 6 or 7 weeks, then take a hiatus before returning uninterrupted in February for the rest of the season. Hands down, LOST is the Best Drama on television.

OFF THE LEASH: Disgusting Television!!!

It takes a rare piece of shit program to get me riled up enough to actually tell people to boycott watching it. Perhaps that's because I have learned from past examples like the Christian rights watchdog groups always losing in their efforts to get homosexual programming banned by drawing huge attention and ratings to said programs. But dammit, LIFETIME really went to the dogs with their, ummm, "original" reality show OFF THE LEASH, which takes a look into a doggie talent agency in LA called Le Paws. It's only obvious to me that the show is scripted and fake. The owners of the dogs are all disgustingly hammy for the cameras and psychotic as hell. No person on this show has a sliver of diginity....nor does anyone on the show exude any real love toward their pets. OH, and the people at Le Paws make it a point to say that they are only in this for the $$$ that the dogs (slaves to their owners and employers) will bring them. The 'trainer' of the dogs is always throwing a hissy fit and is never actually training the dogs...and the dogs are always 'trained' as a group with their obnoxious human owners always present. The only reasons to watch this show is because of the dogs themselves, but even they are given precious little air time... and I'm sorry, but no amount of airtime in hell is going to keep me tuned in week after week to watch the assholes (the Le Paws employees and the pet owners themselves) depict their 'dramas' for the cameras. I could stomach one episode and about 10 minutes of the second episode before I said ENUFF ALREADY! As a pet owner myself, I owe it to myself to not support this teletrash!

For what it's worth, here is the order from best to worst on who I thought had the best presentations at Olympus Fashion Week: 1)ULI...2)MICHAEL...3)JEFFREY....4)LAURA Here is the actual order from best to worst on who the judges felt had the best presentations: 1)JEFFREY....2)ULI....3)LAURA....4)MICHAEL And here is the order from best PERSONAL CHARACTER to worst of the final 4: 1)MICHAEL and ULI tied. They were the nicest of the four presenters....3)LAURA. She definitely had her bitchy side and is no doubt cut-throat, but overall the absolute most vile person of the final 4 (and of all the designers from all three seasons) was JEFFREY. I think Jeffrey had a good collection, though. If anything good comes of his win it's that he is someone who was once rock-bottom in his life shooting up all kinds of heroin and crack and he has been able to turn his life around and win Project Runway. That's an inspiring story. But he still has a long way to go with interpersonal relations with people.

THE DEPARTED

You know, there really isnt anything billiant about the script to this movie. In fact, there a few loopholes that just don't make sense to me. But what does make this movie brilliant is the BRILLIANT Martin Scorcese. I bow down to this master of direction. He recharged this Good Guys Vs Bad Guys flick, expertly acted by thespians Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Leo D! I don't really want to go into the plot, other than to say it contains two moles working on opposite sides of the law (with some key twists that would spoil the film if I were to pass them along). Oh, and since seeing this movie last week I now have a hard-on for guys with Boston accents (mmmm... Mark Wahlberg has never turned me on more). There is early Oscar buzz on this one, so make sure you check it out. I mean, seriously, it's SCORCESE! A-

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVES

Being a fan of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE is like being a Cubs fan - you are there for your team during the good and the bad (and mostly it's been bad). But every so often your team hits it out of the ballpark and you laugh your ass off. I guess that's why I live SNL so much - it's made me laugh during a lonely high school period, I laughed my ass off (while getting drunk on Mad Dog) during my college years at Eastern Illinois University, I stuck with it during my coming out years, and I even caught it here and there once my live Saturday nights were spent cruising around Sidetracks and Steamworks. And now, SNL is a TiVo staple that joins my other sketchers (THE UNDERGROUND and MADTV). This season we lost Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch (to 30 ROCK) and Chris Parnell, Horatio Sanz and Finesse Mitchell (to budgeting reasons). No one entered the establishment, and right now no one needs to. The cast last year had grown too big...so this year's survivors have more time to develop their chemistry with viewers. Unfortunately a few of the members have been with the show too long, and new blood will be needed by next year to keep the show fresh. Last year's newcomers, however, are doing exceptional work this season (Bill Hader, Andy Samburg, Kristin Wiig and Jason Sudeikis). I have a soft spot for all the cast members (Amy Poehler, Darrel Hammond, Fred Armissen, Kenan Thompson, Maya Rudoph, Will Forte and Seth Meyers) and would hate to see any one go, but I also feel its in the best interest of the series to purge even a few more of the longer-running cast members in favor of new talent. Because what the series needs are more breakout stars like Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Adam Sandler, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, and so forth to REALLY bring people back. And so far Andy Samburg seems to be the only breakout performer (thanks to his AWESOME SNL DIGITAL SHORTS - LAZY SUNDAY, in particular)

TOP TEN, FALL 2006

With 30 ROCK and TWENTY GOOD YEARS now past their premiere dates I can look back on this season and pick my TOP TEN shows (includes returnees, too). 1. LOST (ABC), 2. DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (ABC), 3. UGLY BETTY (ABC, NEW), 4. VERONICA MARS (THE CW), 5. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (CBS), 6. HEROES (NBC, NEW), 7. THE CLASS (CBS, NEW), 8. 30 ROCK (NBC, NEW), 9. TWENTY GOOD YEARS (NBC, NEW), 10. STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP (NBC, NEW). Early pickups were just announced: UGLY BETTY, HEROES and JERICHO (CBS) have all been given full-season commitments. Early cancellations: KIDNAPPED (NBC), SMITH (CBS), VANISHED (FOX) and possibly HAPPY HOUR (FOX).

BOOK REVIEW: DANCE OF DEATH

My favorite authors are Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, and I just finished my next book of theirs, DANCE OF DEATH. Most of their books are stand-alone features, but lately the characters of Aloysius Pendergast and his brother Diogenes have been at the forefront, with DOD being the penultimate entry before things conclude in BOOK OF THE DEAD (which I am awaiting to arrive in mail order hardback). What's so frickin great about DOD is that it returns so many characters from their past books: Margo Green (Relic, Reliquary), Bill Smithback (Relic, Reliquary, Thunderhead, Cabinet of Curiosities), Nora Kelly (Thunderhead, Cabinet of Curiosities), Vincent D'Agosta (Relic, Reliquary, Brimstone), Laura Hayward (Reliquary, Brimstone), Bryce Harriman (Relic, Reliquary, Cabinet of Curiosities, Brimstone), Viola Maskalene (Brimstone), Eli Glinn (Ice Limit) and so on. So even though you don't need to read all the books in order to understand DOD (well, you might want to read BRIMSTONE to prepare you), it's a hell of a lot more fun to have read them first. The premise of this book is that SPecial Agent Pendergast's brother is killing off those people closest to Aloysius: which, if you think about it, is brilliant...because all of the people who might get killed off have been major characters in past books who you KNEW wouldnt get killed off. But in DANCE OF DEATH all bets are off and ANYONE could be the next victim. In fact, I was reallllllllly upset a couple of times in the book when a favorite of mine bit the dust. But that's life (er, death, actually). And this book is one of their best. I am actually glad that I am reading them now because the final book in the series (BOOK OF THE DEAD) has already been published - so I won't have to wait long before I know how this masterpiece finishes off. Bad Numbers

One of the ironies this season was all of the new shows that featured numbers in their titles. The other irony is that they are all underperforming. Last night, NBC's 30 ROCK and TWENTY GOOD YEARS were the latest TV casualties with a 5.5 and 4.7, respectively. But given NBC's weak line-up of BIGGEST LOSER and KIDNAPPED it comes as no surprise. What DOES surprise is the night's other ratings flop, THE NINE, which follows the mega-successful LOST on ABC. THE NINE only mustered up a 5.7 losing more than half of LOST's audience. ABC had similar results with SIX DEGREES following GREY'S ANATOMY. Don't expect either show to make it to season 2. Also losing ground each and every week is NBC's STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP - a boring, talky, too-serious it sucks look inside the workings of an SNL-like series. The real bummer for me is 30 ROCK. I want that little show to succeed, and I only hope NBC stands by it and gives it another shot somewhere else on their schedule. Then again, with so few success stories for NBC maybe they will. Also look for NBC's 1 VS 100 to premiere tomorrow night.

My Favorite Network

Ever since the 80s I have been a supporter of NBC (Family Ties, Cheers, Seinfeld, Golden Girls, Spencer, Facts of Life, Friends, Just Shoot Me, The Naked Truth, The Single Guy, 227, Amen, Empty Nest, Night Court, Newsradio, Jesse, Will & Grace, ALF, Frasier - and those are just the comedies!). So it was heartbreaking went NBC went from #1 to #4 in the last 3 years. I realize that these things are cyclical and that NBC will be #1 again one day (and comedies will be number one again one day, too). Until then, though, I have to look at what's on television these days (and which network is entertaining me the most): and that network is the Alphabet network! My three favorite shows are all on ABC (LOST, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, and my newest guilty pleasure: UGLY BETTY). And though I don't watch, GREY'S ANATOMY and DANCING WITH THE STARS are tearing up the charts. Plus, BROTHERS & SISTERS is good and THE NINE looks promising. Some weak spots are the traditional 30-minute comedies (but this is true with all the networks): HELP ME HELP YOU is just average, and THE KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY, NOTES FROM THE UNDERBELLY and BIG DAY have all been shelved until they can be properly be showcased. ABC also has some serious weaknesses on Mondays (WIFE SWAP, SUPERNANNY and WHAT ABOUT BRIAN) and Fridays (MEN IN TREES). But overall ABC keeps building a few really strong hits each year and I am loving that. As for NBC, they have some really quality new shows (STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP, KIDNAPPED and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS) - but the shows aren't delivering the ratings. The bright spot, though, is the addicting HEROES. NBC is now starting to rely on game shows (DEAL OR NO DEAL and 1 VS 100) to bring the viewers in. I just hope NBC can downsize the procedurals and start tackling some more quirky inventive shows. Until then, ABC is now my Must See TV!

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART ???

For those who don't already know FRIDAY THE 13TH is being remade by Jerry Bruckheimer. This isn't a sequel, per se, but rather a reinvention of the original material. So I wonder: if a sequel to FREDDY VS JASON gets made (the 11th of the series), does it get called the 12th movie in the series (not counting the remake) or the 13th movie in the series (counting the remake). And what if the remake does SO WELL that a sequel to the REMAKE gets made? Is that movie called FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 all over again??? Just wondering....! Here is something I DO KNOW: my ranking of each of the movies so far: 1. FRIDAY THE 13TH (PART 1): none of the sequels ever quite captured what the original showed. 2. FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER. I LOVED this movie! It had lots of nudity and was just LOTS of fun. 3. FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2: This movie was severely edited down to make an R rating. I would LOVE to see the director's original vision without the cuts because I think the released film was really good - and uncut will be just that much better. 4. FREDDY VS JASON (Part 11): This one had the biggest budget, and was really fun. 5. FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3 IN 3D: I hated it upon it's original release but have grown fond of it over time. 6. FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 5: A NEW BEGINNING: Lots of deaths, not all that great, but it did have a mystery to it unmatched since Part 1. 7. JASON X (Part 10): Jason ends up in outer space. The Jason movies I like the most are the ones at camp, and this one is SO not at Camp Crystal Lake. However, it is kinda fun to see the slasher flick in outer space. 8. FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 6: yep, I liked it. HOWEVER, I DID NOT LIKE 9. FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 7, 10. FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 8: JASON TAKES MANHATTEN and (THE ABSOLUTE WORST) 11. JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY (Part 9).

So FUCKING HOT!

I often get asked what mainstream actors I would like to have sex with. Hands down, James Franco is my star of choice. I fell in lust with this actor from the brilliant (but short-lived) NBC series FREAKS & GEEKS. He then graduated to film work, turning me on all over again with SPIDER-MAN and the recent FLYBOYS. What I like most about him (and true of other guys like him) is that he isn't overly gorgeous. You can definitely see some physical flaws, which I find most sexy in a man. There is something about a scar or an imperfectional that appeals to me. Guys who are EXTREMELY GORGEOUS somehow turn me off (oddly enough). And of course ANYONE who oozes being stuck-up on his looks is an absolute turn-off. For James Franco, he is undeniably sexy, but also has a raw talent (I believe he won a Golden Globe award for his portrayel of James Dean)....another characteristic that gets my juices flowing. I am more turned on to a creative mind that an intellectual mind. Artists inspire me and thus become a weakness for me sexually. I just find James Franco so FUCKING HOT!

LOST TREASURE: DEAD LIKE ME

Sometimes TV is sooooo good that it's destined to be canceled (i.e.: FREAKS & GEEKS, WONDERFALLS, GREG THE BUNNY). And so goes the tale of the brilliant (but cancelled) DEAD LIKE ME. DLM lasted two seasons on SHOWTIME. It's a series that is the very definition of dark humor. In it, our main character George is killed off by a toilet seat falling out of the clouds. She becomes a grim reaper: the newest addition to a group of grim reapers who have to give the bad news to the recently deceased before accumulating "x" number of souls before they themselves can pass on to the next stage (whatever that stage may be). Complicating things are pesky little gravelings that show up and set things in motion. Trust me, you don't want to piss off a graveling. This show is also airing in repeats on Sci-Fi, though much watered down. You will want the DVD version instead because that's where you can get away with F words and bare butts (the lead male had to bend over in episode 4, drop trou and have his manhole manchecked for drugs). If you are a fan of Quality TV, DEAD LIKE ME is worth a look. A-

FALL TV: HEROES and BROS. & SISTERS

I just watched a couple more pilots over the weekend: HEROES on NBC Mondays and BROTHERS AND SISTERS on ABC Sundays. First, BROTHERS AND SISTERS: it follows DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and is also something of a soap opera. The series was entertaining enough for me to watch the second episode, but JUST barely. Whereas DH has dark humor, B & S is just dark. So far the show is grounded in reality, and it's hard to say if it will delve into classic nighttime soap cattiness (like DYNASTY and DALLAS). Ratings show that B&S lost a HUGE chunk of DESPERATE's audience, so the show is going to have to get a LOT more interesting if it intends to stick around. The better of these two new shows is HEROES. What I liked about HEROES is that, ironically, it DOES take itself seriously. For a change it's nice to see a superhero-themed series go for the drama rather than the cheese. I think if HEROES can maintain the mood and theme established in the pilot then it will have a shot at sticking around the NBC sked for awhile. And let's face it, NBC is sorely in need of some HEROES. HEROES: A; BROTHERS & SISTERS: C+
